Final Gathering Participants - THE BRIDGE IS FLOODED!

If you are planning to attend the Roanoke 100 Miler Final Gathering, keep reading...

The low-water bridge from River’s Edge to Smith Park was completely flooded over as of 6pm earlier tonight. The road that leads through the park is also closed.
If you plan to attend the 100 Miler Final Gathering, here are your two options to get to Smith Park:

1. Shortest option: Park on the neighborhood streets near the new Wasena Tap Room restaurant and River House Apartments. Hop on the Greenway from there and head across the river bridge. It’s about a 5 minute walk.
2. Longer option: Park at Wasena Park and travel on the Greenway (opposite direction from Vic Thomas Park/Black Dog Salvage). It’s about a 15 minute walk.

Once again, the entire road is closed to traffic, so unless the water clears before tomorrow, your only route to Smith Park is via the Wasena side of the Greenway, and HUMAN POWERED (how appropriate :-).

Hope to see you all there! If you have questions, feel free to reply, and I'll try to answer via my Iphone email.

Final Gathering Details and Trek Bikes Giveaway!

3pm, Sunday April 14th at Smith Park

As the countdown timer ticks away, it’s time to start thinking about our 2nd annual Roanoke 100 Miler Final Gathering.

The folks at East Coasters are huge advocates of outdoor recreation and our Greenways, and to help celebrate the conclusion of the Roanoke 100 Miler, they are giving away two Trek bikes with a combined value of nearly $1,400. Now that's one dandy final prize, and it’s a $500 upgrade compared to last year’s Trek bike giveaways.

As if the bike giveaway isn’t enough, we’ll also have gift card giveaways from Walkabout Outfitter, Fleet Feet Sports and maybe a few more that are taking up room in my prize drawer.

Here's some more info to wet your whistle:

What is the Roanoke 100 Miler Final Gathering?
A gathering of course. A place for us all to meet and celebrate our miles together.

Who is invited?
All 100 Miler participants whether you completed your 100 miles or not.

Where is it going to be?
I'll set up camp under the shelter at Smith Park on the Roanoke River Greenway. In case you do not know where Smith Park is, click here to see a map to the entire Roanoke River Greenway including Smith Park.

When and what time?
We'll meet on Sunday April 14th at 3pm.

How do I get there?
Human powered, of course. There is very limited parking at Smith Park, so you should start at Wasena or River's Edge Sports complex and follow the Greenway to Smith Park. You can walk, run, bike or if you are really daring, paddle your way to Smith Park. Click here to see the location on Google Maps.

Parking?
Both Wasena Park and River's Edge Sports Complex attach to the Roanoke River Greenway. Both of those parks have large gravel lots and also have direct access to the Greenway for your human-powered venture to Smith Park (which residers right in the middle of Wasena and River's Edge parks).

What will we do?
This is just a casual meet and greet where our Parks and Recreation staff will share some info about this year's 100 Miler and give some insight on some additions and adjustments to next year's event.

Who can win the prizes?
Only the people who show up at the Smith Park shelter on Sunday will be eligible to win the bikes. Other random drawings will be held for the Fleet Feet and Walkabout gift cards. All 1,200 participants will be eligible for that prize whether they are on-site or not.

Questions?
As usual, I'll be out playing on the Greenways and won't have time to answer questions, but feel free to contact my nonfictional counterpart, Joe Hanning. All of his info is listed in the right side-bar of this blog.

See you at the park!
